From northern lights to lightning over Metro Detroit: When to expect rain

Northern lights will be viewable over SE Michigan Sunday night

This Mother’s Day is bringing nice weather to Metro Detroit, which is ideal for anyone with plans.

Those activities might involve skywatching. The aurora borealis, or “northern lights,” will be viewable over Southeast Michigan again. The best aurora is often seen from 10 p.m. and 2 a.m., according to the Space Weather Prediction Center.

From northern lights to lightning

Much of the area will have a window to potentially see the northern lights on Sunday night, but clouds will increase after midnight. Showers will move across the area overnight, including the chance of a thunderstorm. Most of the rain will be out of the region before the morning commute. Lows will be in the mid to upper 50s. Winds will be out of the south at 6 to 12 mph.

Monday

Besides a few showers Monday morning, skies will become partly cloudy to mostly sunny midday over Metro Detroit. Clouds and rain chances will continue over the Thumb during this time.

Along a slow-moving cold front, the showers and thunderstorms will begin building and setting up over Metro Detroit in the mid-afternoon and last through the evening. Rain may be heavy at times. Afternoon temperatures will jump to around 80 degrees. Southwesterly winds will be 10 to 15 mph with gusts up to 25 mph.

Although there will be breaks in the rain, the chance of it will continue on Monday night. Otherwise, it will be mostly cloudy. Lows will be in the mid 50s.

Highs will be around 80 degrees on Monday afternoon in much of Metro Detroit. That's about 10 degrees warmer than the average. Plan for the chance of showers and a few thunderstorms, particularly in the afternoon and evening. Rain may be heavy at times. (WDIV)

Tuesday

Rain will become widespread Tuesday morning before tapering off by early afternoon. Behind the cold front, temperatures will dive with highs only in the lower to mid 60s. Lows will be around 50 degrees. Lows will be around 50 degrees.

Through Weekend

Warmer air will push highs into the lower to mid 70s for the rest of the week, which is seasonable. Skies will be mostly sunny to partly cloudy on Wednesday and Thursday, but the rain chances will return for Friday and Saturday. Sunday will be partly cloudy with the chance of a stray shower.

What are the normal temperatures?

Metro Detroit’s normal highs are around 70 degrees over the next several days, and normal lows are around 50 degrees.
