Flashpoint: What did we learn from the Michigan primary?

DETROIT – In a political year, this usually sets up its own kind of March madness -- because Tuesday is Super Tuesday.

Fifteen states and American Samoa hold their primaries two dance. But, as was the case with our primary last week, the usual drama is, well, lacking. We remain on the Biden-Trump collision course. Actually, we did get a little drama last Tuesday, as a judge said enough is enough. Pete Hoekstra is the Michigan Republican chairman and Kristina Karamo is out.

We did get yet another candidate for the open Senate seat as former Republican Congressman Justin Amash is jumping in. What are the takeaways from last week? We’ll talk about that.

We’re also going to catch up our public health worries. No, it’s not so much COVID at the moment. It’s two diseases that many assumed were in the rearview mirror. Michigan is among the state’s reporting a measles case, and Michigan and Detroit in particular are watching an unexpected surge inc ases of syphilis, long considered to be largely eradicated. We’ll turn to Dr. Jim Baker at University of Michigan for his thoughts.

Along with all of those primaries, Tuesday also marks the scheduled start of the trial for James Crumbley. Is he, too, culpable for the Oxford High School shooting as his wife was found to be? Or can he avoid her fate?
